Video Vibes: All those dancing, half-naked women in music videos, along with the violent imagery of video games, leave most girls with a bad feeling, according to a recent study of 483 children.
That's because recent video technology panders to predominantly male interests, suggests Robert Kubey, assistant professor of communications at Rutgers, and co-author of the study with Reed Larson of the University of Illinois. Girls simply aren't raised in the timehonored tradition of competition and violence. Rock videos are particularly upsetting.
"Music videos present a great deal of violent and sexual imagery and are male-oriented and in harmony with male interests,'' Kubey told Strategies, the newsletter of Strategies for Media Literacy, an organization that promotes media studies in the schools.
