William Ziglar received the 1998 Christa McAuliffe Reach for the
Stars Award from the Fund for the Advancement of Social Studies
Education of the National Council for the Social Studies. Ziglar, a
history teacher at Penncrest High School in Media, Pa., received an
award and a $1,000 FASSE grant to help develop his winning project, Pi
Alpha Epsilon, which seeks to establish the first-ever social studies
honor society. The award honors McAuliffe, the teacher who died in the
Challenger space shuttle accident.
Maria Guadalupe Ramos received the 1999 Bilingual Teacher of the Year Award from Scholastic Inc., a children's publishing and media company. Ramos, who teaches students with limited English skills at Harris Elementary School in Austin, Texas, received the award for her excellence in teaching, her community leadership, and her ability to inspire and instruct students.
